Could eating a diet based on your blood type help you trim down and get healthier?  Blood Type Diets were first created by Dr. Peter D’Adamo and he wrote a book called Eat Right for Your Type. This diet claims that people with different blood types should eat different foods. According to D’Adamo, the foods you eat chemically react with your blood type. If you follow a diet designed for your blood type, the claim is that your body will digest food more efficiently, you will lose weight, have more energy as well as help prevent disease.

 

So what can you eat if you follow the Blood Type Diet? Well, that all depends on which blood group you are:

Type O:

  • These people are supposed to be like the hunters from many many years ago.
  • Should follow a high-protein diet.
  • Increased intake of lean meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables.
  • Restricted intake of grains, beans, and dairy.
  • Intake of various supplements to help with tummy troubles and other issues which Type O’s are prone to.

Type A:

  • Shoul follow a meat-free diet based on fruits and veg, beans and legumes, and whole grains.
  • These should ideally be organic and fresh, because D’Adamo says these people have a sensitive immune system.

Type B:

  • Avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds.
  • Chicken is apparently also problematic.
  • Encouraged to eat green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and low-fat dairy.

Type AB:

  • The focus should be on tofu, seafood, dairy, and green vegetables.
  • D’Adamo says these people tend to have low stomach acid.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoked or cured meats.

 

So what is the evidence?

In 2000, the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association researched blood type diets and sought to determine whether these diets were visionary science or nonsense. They concluded that they are most definitely nonsense.

 

In 2013 a systematic review of the evidence supporting blood type diets was published in one of the world’s most prestigious nutrition journals. The researchers went through more than a thousand research papers that might shed some light on this topic, but none of the studies showed an association between blood type diets and health-related outcomes. They concluded that “there is currently no evidence that an adherence to blood type diets will provide health benefits, despite the substantial presence and perseverance of blood type diets within the health industry.”

 

D’Adamo responded to this conclusion by saying that the reason we don’t see any studies on blood types and nutrition is “because of little interest and available money.” But this guy has sold over 7 million books. Surely there should be little loose change lying around to fund some studies? Well, in 1996, he wrote, “I am beginning the eighth year of a ten year trial on reproductive cancers, using the Blood Type Diets … By the time I release the results in another 2 years, I expect to make it scientifically demonstrable that the Blood Type Diet plays a role in cancer remission.” So therefore we should have heard something by 1998. But more than 16 years later and we are still waiting for the results. Quite a clever tactic from his side.

 

In 2012 the Australian Dietetic Association placed The Blood Type diet in it’s top three worst fad diets ever! Though the blood type diet remains controversial, there are alot of people who swear by it. The biggest issue with this diet at the end of the day is that you may end up cutting out whole food groups and thereby losing out on balanced nutrition. It also does not take disease conditions or allergies into consideration. We are strong believers in the concept that one size does nto fit all and wit regards to this fad diet there is no way that there are only 4 diet groups that will work for everyone. We should rather focus on healthy balanced eating, that includes a variety of foods in the correct portion sizes and zone in on healthy sustainable lifestyle changes.
